The Great 8 struck again with his eighth career hat trick to declaw the Florida Panthers, who were attempting a late comeback. Alex Ovechkin started today's scoring early and put the game away with a brilliant goal from a very difficult angle against net minder Tomas Vokoun. Eric Fehr, who's been on a lovely little scoring run of late, added his own tally against the Cats.
Ovie's empty netter gave him his 41st goal of the season and yet another hat trick and reason for wild celebration from the bench. The only downside of today's game (besides the fact that the Panthers were able to twice catch the Caps' lead) was the eight power plays the boys allowed as a result of more silly penalties.
But we'll take the 2 points and the guys get to take advantage of some Florida sunshine and r&r with their dads before returning to D.C. More big games await the Caps this week with Montreal and Pittsburgh (who just fired their coach Michel Therrien - could have seen that one coming). So the Pens will face their arch rivals at the Phone Booth on Sunday with a new bench boss, Dan Bylsma, head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Will make an always intense contest even more interesting, for sure!
Don't forget must-see Monday t.v. tomorrow night with a brand new episode of Capitals Red Line Monday! Be sure to tune in at 9:30 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet to see what fun and fascinating things the Caps have in store next....
